dc.description.abstract | Facing the worldwide coral degradation, active restorations are moving toward improving techniques to maintain coral coverage. Transplant methods have been used to restore coral reef areas that were completely degraded; however restoration is not commonly employed at coral reefs with evident loss that may jeopardize the maintenance of the community. In this study the re-attachment concept using the natural fragmentation of branched-corals was tested as an accelerator process to natural recovery based on asexual reproduction. Survivorship, growth and attachment rates of three Pocillopora species on both natural and artificial substrates were evaluated at four sites of Islas Marietas. Over one year of monitoring during 2012-2013, resulted in a high survivorship of 87% on artificial underwater structures and 67% on natural substrate, the height and radial growth, on both substrata increase 2-fold from the initial size; although both substrata were viable, coral fragments attach faster on natural (4 months) than artificial structures (6 months). The results demonstrate that re-attachment using natural substrata is a potential and no invasive instrument for treating coral reefs not completely degraded in restoration programs. dc.description.abstract | Zepeda-Romero, L.C.",,"2013",,"The increase in survival rates among preterm infants, characteristics of neonatal care for such infants and a lack of suitable programs for preventing, detecting and treating retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are factors that have made this disease the main cause of preventable blindness among children in Mexico. The advent of antiangiogenic agents in cancer treatment and their off-label use with favorable results in the treatment of proliferative vessel disease of the retina among adult patients, as well as anecdotal reports in the literature and a series of cases showing serious methodological flaws, have prompted their use in the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity. Unfortunately, these agents used indiscriminately in our country have a systemic absorption and secondary effects on the preterm patient's body. There are no long-term monitoring studies that guarantee their safe use in this segment of the population. The critical vesicle concentration (cvc), measured by tensiometry, conductimetry, ion-selective-electrode potentiometry and dye solubilization, is similar to the value reported in the literature. Moreover, the combination of surfactant-ion-selective-electrode and bromide-ion-selective-electrode potentiometry indicates that the vesicles are substantially ionized (? approximate 0.5) in the proximity of the cvc. The transition from small unilamellar vesicles to larger multilamellar liposomes was detected at 0.2 wt% by viscometry, conductimetry and dye solubilization measurements. The theology of the DDAB/water system was studied as a function of surfactant concentration and temperature. Non-Newtonian behavior, viscoelasticity, yield stresses and time-dependent flow behavior were observed. Maxima and minima in the dynamic moduli and in conductivity are related to structural changes and phase transitions. Moreover, in time-dependent shear flow, the microstructure is modified and the theological response shifts from thixotropic to antithixotropic or vice versa, depending on the DDAB concentration and the level and duration of the final applied stress. The conductivity behavior in the Lam1 phase region can be qualitatively explained by the capillary superconductivity theory.
