Seasonal abundance of the Orange-breasted Bunting (Passerina leclancherli) in the riparian forest of western Mexico. - The Orange-breasted Bunting (Passerina leclancherii) is an endemic species of Mexico which is found mainly in tropical deciduous forests. In this study, we describe the phenology and abundance of the Orange-breasted Bunting in riparian forest fragments with different habitat characteristics. The study was conducted at three sites in the riparian forests of the lower river basin Ayuquila (Jalisco), where the species was sampled using mist-nets. The species abundance was greater in the dry season, especially in one of the three sites, characterized by greater herbaceous and low shrub cover. In addition, this site was characterized by its proximity to the tropical deciduous forest and less influence of agricultural areas. The results suggest that riparian forest patches may be an important habitat for the Orange-breasted Buntings during the dry season, probably related to increased food availability in this habitat rather than in tropical deciduous forest, the species' main habitat. © The Neotropical Ornithological Society.
