dc.description.abstractCongenital palmar polyonychia (CPP) is a rare and usually sporadic birth defect. We report on a Mexican girl with CPP of both 5th fingers and her sister with ectrodactyly with ulnar ray deficits and agenesis of the ulna. In previous reports, CPP has been seen in ectrodactyly with involvement of the ulna and ulnar digital rays and with postaxial polydactyly. Such findings observed in our patients can be considered a form of CPP. Autosomal dominant inheritance of CPP is more likely based in previous informative families with vertical transmission and instances of male-to-male transmission. The present and two previous families with affected sibs only may represent parental gonadal mosaicism, whereas de novo mutation or incomplete evaluation of relatives could be an explanation for sporadic cases. Variable expression of the CPP phenotype may be a new autosomal dominant entity, i.e., a CPP-postaxial limb defect syndrome. dc.description.abstractVerdaguer, E.",,"2010",,"In the present study the role of JAK/STAT and Akt in apoptosis was evaluated in cerebellar granule cells after treatment with the mitochondrial toxin MPP +. Firstly, we evaluated the role of the prosurvival Akt pathway in MPP +-induced apoptosis and found that MPP + rapidly reduced the phosphorylation of Akt at Ser473. Since PTEN is an upstream regulator of Akt, its inhibition with bpV(pic) (1-30?M) should activate Akt, however, it did not attenuate CGC cell death mediated by MPP + but protected CGC from apoptosis mediated by S/K deprivation. We also demonstrated that after the treatment with the complex I inhibitor, the expression levels of STAT1 increased and the levels of STAT3 decreased at the time points tested (0.5-8h). Meanwhile, pharmacological inhibition of the JAK/STAT pathway with AG490 (10-40?M) was neuroprotective, probably due to its antioxidant properties, the Jak2-inhibitor-II potentiated MPP + neurotoxicity. Collectively, our data indicate that the treatment of CGC with the neurotoxin MPP + decreased two prosurvival pathways: STAT3 and Akt. dc.description.abstractGonzalez-García, J.R.",,"2007",,"RT-PCR studies in 93 patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia from the Mexican West were done in order to know the proportion of b2a2 and b3a2 BCR/ABL1 transcripts. Forty-five patients showed the b3a2 transcript (48%), 37 (40%) displayed the b2a2 and in 11 cases (12%) both transcripts were detected. Statistical analyses showed that these figures are in accordance with two of three similar studies realized in Mexican population. Moreover, significant differences were found among Mexican people and patients from other countries, namely Ecuador, England, Italy, Poland, Japan, and Thailand. Ecuadorian patients showed differences with all the populations analyzed. dc.description.abstractBitzer-Quintero, O.K.",,"2011",,"Tryptophan (TRP), which plays an important role in immune system regulation, protein synthesis, serotonin (5-HT) and melatonin production, is a potent endogenous free radical scavenger and antioxidant. The aim of this work was to determine the efficacy of TRP in neuro-inflammation induced by systemic administration of lipopolysacharide (LPS, 20. mg/kg) which promotes the synthesis of free radical (LPO: MDA and 4-HDA), and pro-inflammatory cytokine Interferon-? (IFN-?) in different brain regions (cerebral cortex and hippocampus) of rats. Experiments were performed on adult female, pregnant and lactating rats fed with a diet of TRP content (0.5. mg/100. g protein), cerebral cortex and hippocampus were evaluated for lipid peroxidation (LPO) products, nitrites, nitrates and plasmatic concentration of IFN-?. LPO levels in LPS+TRP groups were significantly decreased than that obtained in the LPS group. However, there were no observed differences in plasmatic levels of nitrites and nitrates as well as IFN-?, neither in the cerebral cortex or hippocampus. The TRP has protective effect in the oxidative damage in a model of endotoxic shock in the breading nurslings induced by the systemic administration of LPS, acting as a scavenger of free radicals.
