Resumen
Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic, complex, heterogeneous pathology, characterized by respiratory symptoms of continuous onset and limitation of air flow, represents a health problem with great impact on the population of 40 years of age or more. Objective: to determine the diagnostic method of choice in COPD and the indicated treatment used most frequently to avoid exacerbations. Method: Retrospective descriptive study, carried out through searches of publications of scientific articles in electronic medical journals Google scholar, PubMed, Elsevier, Cochrane, among others, from which bibliographic references were taken for the preparation of the present review. Results: it was possible to determine the diagnostic method of choice in COPD is the clinical suspicion to all adult patients with exposure to risk factors, accompanied by chronic cough with or without expectoration or dyspnea which is usually confirmed with spirometry, provides a description Useful for the severity and pathological changes in COPD, it is the gold standard for diagnosis, while its treatment is related to the patient's risk and phenotype. Conclusion: The diagnosis of COPD is based on the clinic accompanied by a complementary examination, such as spirometry, a very rare method but it is very helpful since it allows us to describe the severity and pathological changes in the disease, its treatment is based on its level of risk and the phenotype that the patient presents.
