Objectives: To determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and identify associated factors in people older than 18 years old residents in canton Cuenca.
Material and Methods: The Community Oriented Program for the Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD) was applied to an analytical cross-sectional study for people aged 18 years and older residing in the Cuenca area previously validated and applied by trained interviewers. The prevalence of skeletal muscle pain was calculated and we searched if has association with age, sex, place of residence, occupation and smoking.
Results: It was evidenced that the most frequent group of respondents was between 18 and 27 years old (23%), with a mean of 42.9 years; The majority of the population is female (59.6%); Those living in rural areas accounted for 57.4%; Household work (25.5%) is the most frequent activity among respondents, and 4 out of 10 people use the public health system (MSP).
This study found a prevalence of musculoskeletal pain of 32.2%. There was association of musculoskeletal pain with age over 50 years (p = 0.00) and residence in rural areas (p = 0.00).
Conclusion: The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain found in Cuenca was the expected in comparison to other Latin American countries. The place of residence (rural area) was an important factor in its appearance, as well as the age of over 50 years
