Abstract
Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are considered a public health problem, it has been increasing significantly; causing a high rate of morbidity, mortality and high health costs.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of open heart surgery, pathologies and types of surgery, in patients of the “José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital”, from 2015 to 2018. Methods: It is an observational descriptive study conducted with data taken from the medical records of patients who were treated in the Cardiac Surgery department. The observation unit was the patients who underwent open heart surgery at the “José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital”, from May 2015 to December 2018.
Results: The prevalence of heart surgery was 9.7%, corresponding to 171 patients; observing that these pathologies were frequent in people older than 65 years (33.9%); belonging to the male sex in 58.5%; all identifying themselves as mestizos; the 43% of them do not work; overweight more than a third of them 38.3%, coming from urban areas (79,5%); the majority with general insurance; with valvulopathies being the most frequent aortic stenosis standing out in 30,4%, followed by interatrial communication with 19,3% and myocardial ischemia in 11,1%; corresponding to aortic valve change 43,3%, CIA closure 18,7% and coronary revascularization in 11,1% respectively.
Conclusions: The prevalence of open heart surgery is 9.7%; the main cardiac pathologies associated with the study group are congenital and are associated with the presence of ischemic heart disease, as well as stenosis and valvular insufficiency
