Resumen
The objective of the present work is to determine the relationship between parental functioning and the beginning of sexual activity in teenagers. The research question is: what is the relationship between the different categories of parental functioning and the initiation of sexual activity in adolescents? considering as hypothesis that there is a relationship between the categories of parental functioning and the initiation of sexual activity in adolescents.
The methodological study has a quantitative approach, of non-experimental scope and transectional-correlation. The instruments are: Parental Functioning Scale (EFP) for parents; APGAR Family for adolescents, and a questionnaire about knowledge and habits of sexual life in adolescents, applied to a sample of 60 students of 18 and 19 years, at Universidad del Azuay, Cuenca city. The results have been processed in the IBM SPSS 22 software to establish frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation; in addition, T-Student test to determine the relationship between variables with a level of significance <0.05.
The findings of the study show that the average age of onset of sexual activity in adolescent participants is 15 years, and the relationship between sexual activity in the adolescent stage and parental functioning is established in the categories: communication and interaction, overprotection and rigid behavioral control; accepting the alternative hypothesis. It is concluded that, to less communication and strict discipline on the part of the parents, greater possibility of initiating sexual activity in adolescence.
