Resumen
This research work aims to the geotechnical study of the Norcay bridge foundations. As a method of checking the initial designs, tests and the respective soil classifications corresponding to foundation level were performed. In the left abutment and in the piles, the results are consistent with earlier studies. However, in the right abutment there is a considerable discrepancy among the results that put in jeopardy the early designs. Therefore, it is necessary to recalculate the stresses that the structure generates on the ground to confirm if the stratum found on foundation level is actually not adequate.
After obtaining the efforts on the ground, it is seen that the stresses of load demand greater efforts with regard to the ones that the stratum would bring as support. Once this comparison was performed, we concluded that the stratum is not suitable for cementing footboard.
Due to the problem described above, a survey of the soil under the foundation was made in search of a resistant stratum, which was found at a depth of 7m with the help of NSPT methods. Since the layer is located at a considerable depth; performing a superficial foundation would be very difficult because it will demand excessive soil movement under the ground water level and the stresses produced on the shoe will also increase. This will imply a new structural design of the stirrup.
To use the initial structural design of the right abutment and to develop a foundation over the resistant stratum, it is necessary to design a deep foundation with driven pilings.
