Resumen
The present research work introduces the principle of tensegrity as a viable system for lightweight structures in Ecuador and its application to large span roofs. The importance of this academic work is the exploration of alternatives to the traditional used structural systems. One of the advantages of tensegrity is to conceive large spans with relatively low weights in comparison with other systems. The stiffness and stability of the system is achieved due to an initial prestress of the structural elements.
Geometry is the most important aspect of a structure. There are several shapes that can be achieved with the principle of tensegrity. Some options proposed in the literature were analyzed. Digital models were generated to obtain a suitable geometric configuration. A scale model of the proposed structure was built in order to better understand behavior of these systems.
A literature review was conducted on methods for: form finding, distribution and calculation of level of prestress guided to the design of these structures. The procedure was assisted by software tools.
The viability of the project was analyzed in our country from the technological point of view, verifying the availability of the materials to construct a project of such characteristics.
A design of the structure was achieved for application, which complies with the service, duration, and stability requirements. The advantages and disadvantages of the system were shown.
