Resumen
The purpose of this project is to evaluate the current performance of the intersection of Av. de las Américas and Ruta Machángara in Cuenca, in the order to recommend different design alternatives that improve the level of service in each access of the intersection. In other words, the aim is to avoid traffic jams, reduce delays, and to solve current traffic problems within the project design deadline. The starting point for the analysis was to determine traffic demand in each access and the geometric features of the roundabout; tracking down in this way, the road capacity, the level of service, and a better understanding of the interception´s operation, in order to stablish the needed upgrading measures. The data required to carry out this study was obtained from manual and automatic traffic volume counts and plate registration at the treated intersection. The roundabout topographical survey information provided from: the Municipal Agency, the Control Agency of Hydrocarbon Regulation, and the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses; were also required. The methodology proposed by the HCM 2010 for the analysis of interchange ramp terminals, roundabouts and signalized intersections was used to process all the gathered information. Finally, the chosen alternative reflected the best level of service for the 20-year design period, along with the geometric design of the intercept to justify the feasibility of operational changes
