In the process of development and learning of each person is involved as the first school the family and it is there where people get the skills that they will use during his life. The main objective of this research was to determine the social skills according to family typology of the students of the faculty of psychology of the University of Cuenca, as well as to identify if there are a significant difference between social skills based on family typology and gender. The sample consisted of 312 students, 205 are women and 107 are men. A socio-demographic record was applied to determine the type of family and the Social Skills Scale (EHS) instrument to obtain information about their social skills. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS, in which a descriptive analysis, frequency measures of central tendency and the tests such as T-Student and ANOVA were applied. It was found that there are important differences by gender when it comes to social skills, yet with regard to family typology, there were no significant differences; it was also found that University students have medium high levels of social skills.
