Resumen
Sociolinguistics is an interdiscipline that studies the relationship between language and social
context. It aims to understand linguistic variability and its interaction with the social environment,
while at the same time explaining the influence of the variation process of a certain group on
general linguistic change. In this order of things, youth slang is a specific way of communicating
that characterizes and identifies a particular group. The main objective of this study is to analyze,
from a variationist perspective, how the lexical-semantic procedures of criminal jargon allow us
to understand the dynamics of the criminal world in the canton of Cuenca. This synchronous study
is carried out within the framework of the DIUC-2019 research project "Configuraciones culturales
e identitarias de los jóvenes de la zona urbana del cantón Cuenca: Una mirada sociolingüística"
and is based on one of its products: Diccionario del lenguaje juvenil (2021).
