Background: there is controversy over the role of deforming oral habits, as a risk factor for dental malocclusion; however, it has become a common condition in clinical practice, of which there are no up-to-date data on the frequency of the problem in the local population.
Objetive: determine the frequency of deforming oral habits in patients treated at the Graduate Clinic of orthodontic Specialty of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Cuenca, in the period 2011-2018. Method and Materials: quantitative study, transversal descriptive, in a population consisting of 609 medical histories of patients treated from 2011 to 2018, postgraduate clinic of the Orthodontic Specialty of the University of Cuenca. The statistical analysis was carried out in the form of distributions according to frequency and percentage of the variables studied, the results were presented in simple tables and double input statistical graphs. Results: 81.6% are in the age group of 6 to 19 years (children and adolescents), with predominance of the female sex (59.1%), with a prevalence of deforming oral habits of 43.5%; with a predominance of lingual interposition at 6.2% and onicophagia at 5.5% in female population. Conclusion: lingual interposition and onicophagia are deforming oral habits in patients treated at the Graduate Clinic of orthodontic Specialty of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Cuenca
