This study focuses on the factors that influence the academic performance of Sociology students at Universidad de Cuenca, the general objective is to analyze the academic performance of students from the 2013 curriculum, the march – august 2018 period, and then establish a set of recommendations based on the results.
This research was conducted under a case study approach, with quantitative and qualitative methods. There is predominance in the quantitative and descriptive exploratory methods. Information was collected from several sources, such as a survey to 99 students from the Sociology undergraduate program in their 2nd and 9th semester during the march – august 2018 period, there were 3 focus groups and 7 interviews to students used to collect first-hand information.In addition, secondary information was used to complement the veracity of the investigation. After processing the information, the factors that were chosen for the study are: personal, institutional, economic and motivational. Based on the outcomes, recommendations were provided to professors and students from the sociology undergraduate program at Universidad de Cuenca in order to change the obtained results and face the limitations that prevent students from performing accordingly.
