Resumen
Background: Human papillomavirus infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the world and a key factor in the development of pre-malignant and malignant cervical lesions that give rise to cervical cancer, and can be found in up to 99, 7% of them.
General objective: to determine the frequency of human papillomavirus in patients with cytological abnormalities seen at SOLCA Cuenca hospital between June 2005- June 2020
Methodology: descriptive study in which 906 clinical records of the SOLCA Cuenca institute of patients who presented cytological abnormalities of the cervix between June 2005 and June 2020 were analyzed. The analysis was carried out on the basis of descriptive statistics with measures of central tendency, proportions, percentages, cross tables and frequency calculation.
Results: In a sample of 602 patients who presented abnormal cervical cytology, of which 13.80% were high-grade lesions (HSIL) and 86.20% were low-grade lesions (LSIL), the presence of HPV was found in 61%. Subtype 16 was the most frequent in the two types of lesions LSIL 15.32% and HSIL 32.05%, other subtypes found were 58,18,39,51 classified as high oncogenic grade. Multiple infection by more than one type was found in 36%.
Conclusions: the presence of HPV in pre-malignant lesions was found in approximately 6 out of 10 women. Thus demonstrating the high prevalence that still exists in the local media with respect to Papilloma Virus infections.
