Introduction: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of venlafaxine compared with fluoxetine to decrease the symptoms of menopause depressive vasomotor and.
Methodology: We carried out a randomized controlled clinical trial to compare the effectiveness of venlafaxine which was administered to 30 patients compared with the administration of fluoxetine administered to 30 patients. We compared the groups according to the age, age at menopause, number of gravida, Age of onset of hot flushes, frequency and duration of hot flushes. To assess the effectiveness was used the scale (Menopause Rating Scale) and the scale "Physical Health Questionnaire" to evaluate the symptoms of menopause and depressants respectively.
Results: The study groups were comparable in accordance with the occupation, marital status, age, gestational age, number of gravida, age of beginning of the menopause, Age of onset of hot flushes, frequency of hot flushes and duration. The averages with the scale "Menopause Rating Scale" are lower in the patients taking venlafaxine, the effect is more evident as the longer the time of treatment. According to the domains significant differences were observed in the somatic and urogenital domain, there were no differences in the urogenital domain. The depressive symptoms evaluated with the scale "Physical Health Questionnaire" were lower in the patients taking venlafaxine, most presented minimal symptoms compared with the patients in the group that received fluoxetine, and approximately half were maintained with minor depression and a patient with mild depression.
Conclusions: The venlafaxine is an effective treatment to reduce the symptoms of depression in the vasomotor and climacteric, above all is an alternative when the hormonal treatment is contraindicated.
