Resumen
This final graduation work entitled "Georeferencing, Analysis and Function of toponymic heritage of the Canton Cuenca: Parish Rural Tarqui" contributes to the study of names of places and the study of the relationship of the diferent places with history, geography and linguistics. The parish of Tarqui is located in the “Canton” (County) of Cuenca in Azuay Province. This research identifies the importance and evolution of places names in that territory, with an ancient origin, Cañari, Quechua and Spanish and also place names of mixed origin cañari-Quichua, Quechua-Spanish. The field research yielded information about the degree of involvement of the communities and people with place names of the different places were they come from. Many of them do not remember the origin and the meaning of the names (Toponimias) many of its meaning is unknown, and some of the oral tradition is missing.
However, some people in the rural parish of Tarqui, have maintained an oral tradition, this tradition was very important during the realization of this research. Through oral history and oral memory, we could gather information that allows the interpretation of “toponimias” and their importance in each of the different spaces and territories surveyed.
This research also contributes to the creation of a database located and georeferenced, from the use of a GIS-Geographic Information System, which identifies the main place names in the area. Toponimias in each of the communities, landforms, hills, rivers, fields of crops, micro-valleys, are an important cultural heritage and intangible heritage. The study also pretends to offer ideas fora “Ordenanza” to conserve the memory and heritage of the names of different places.
