Resumen
Reading brings multiple benefits such as being able to develop in an increasingly literate
environment, make judgments, arguments, and points of view on different topics, as well as obtain
knowledge in different areas. However, the development of reading habits is a problem that parents
and educational institutions face, therefore knowing the different habits that students have will
help themselves. The present research was applied in the Abelardo Tamariz Crespo Educational
Unit of the city of Cuenca- Ecuador in January 2021, its main objective was to describe the reading
habits that high school’s students have, conceived from 5 dimensions. To fulfill this purpose, a
descriptive cross-sectional quantitative methodology was used, the research worked with a
population of 139 students, to whom a simplified version of the Reading Habits Questionnaire of
Larrañaga (2004) was applied. The data obtained in this research showed that students do not have
a reading habit; however, students maintain a normal perception of themselves related with
reading. On the other hand, the results found evidence that student’s access to voluntary reading
is through the loan of books between friends. Most students do not read as a daily routine, the
motivation that leads them to read is more extrinsic than intrinsic. Finally, was evidenced that the
use of internet wasn´t a medium to access the reading, even though they used it every day
