Resumen
The current study was conducted with the objective to determine the self-efficacy levels and its relation with condom use of students of the University of Cuenca. A quantitative study was carried out where 400 undergraduate students (222 women and 178 men) of the University of Cuenca participated, with a range age of 18 to 25 years old. The instrument applied was the CUSES scale to measure the self-efficacy in condom use. This instrument consists in 24 items using three dimensions that measure: a) the placement of the condom; b) condom use with the couple approval, and c) the ability to persuade the couple on condom use. The data was analyzed in the statistical program SPSS using validity tests, factor analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that there are no significant differences between men and women, however, in the descriptive analysis of the dimensión (the placement of the condom) certain differences were found, for example: 27.5% of women do not have the ability to use condoms correctly or buy them without feeling ashamed. For his part 1.7% of men do not have ability to use it, and 2.2% feeling ashamed to buy them, differences that occur because we live in a society where patriarchy prevails and the negotiation in the sexual field usually depends on men.
