Resumen
BACKGROUND: breast cancer is most frequent, it represents 16% of all types of cancer in women, it affects 1% of men, in them there are no screenings. Despite having a good prognosis, it is still associated with a high mortality rate to be diagnosed in advanced stages. The ignorance and practice of breast self-examination is the cause of a late diagnosis and a torpid evolution to which the working population of the nursing department of the "José Carrasco Arteaga" Hospital is not exempt.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE: describe the knowledge and practices on breast self-examination in the nursing staff of the "José Carrasco Arteaga" Hospital in the city of Cuenca.
METHODOLOGY: a quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe is made up of 635 people and the size of the sample was 240 nursing professionals. The questionnaire Blossiers 2014 was applied, the data were analyzed using Excel and SPSS version 24 and presented in tables and graphs.
RESULTS: the level of knowledge that most participants have is good at 38.8%, followed by 25% who have regular knowledge, 21.6% have very good knowledge, 13.3% have insufficient knowledge and only 1.3% have outstanding knowledge.
CONCLUSION: the level of knowledge about the AEM is related to professional training, while age and gender do not influence the level of knowledge of the participants. In the practice of the AEM, sociodemographic characteristics have no influence on this study.
