Background: intergenesic period is the time between the completion of a pregnancy and the conception of a new one, when this period is short, increases maternal and neonatal morbidity, therefore it is important the study and patients characterization treated at the Luis F. Martinez Hospital in Cañar.
Objective: To identify the characteristics associated with short intergenesic period in women attending the hospital Obstetrics Gynecology service area at the Luis F. Martinez Hospital in the City of Cañar, 2014.
Methodology: A retrospective descriptive study was done, the universe consisted of 292 secundiparous and multiparous, with a sample of 172 medical records of patients who had a short intergenesic period.
Data collection was carried out by using a form containing the following variables: age, residence, education level and contraceptive use, then a database in the SPSS program was created and proceeded to analysis by simple tables using frequencies and percentages.
Results: The frequency of short intergenesic period was 58,9%; being more common in women: aged 20-29 years old with 47,7%; adolescents were 20,9%, with only primary education were 36%, 51,2% lived in rural areas and 52,3% had not used any contraceptive method.
Conclusions: The frequency of patients with short intergenesic period is high in this population.
