Resumen
The research problem is based on the persistence of the challenges in the University of
Cuenca for the deconstruction of a hegemonic masculinity, given that 1 out of every 2 students has
suffered sexual harassment (Universidad de Cuenca, 2022), and the 83% students’ indifference to
traditional masculinity ideology (Orellana and Yanza, 2018). All this, despite the educational
institution works for student welfare, as well as student representatives, who are stakeholders in
this problem, due to their influence (Sánchez, 2014).
Therefore, with a psychosocial approach, this study seeked to describe discourses of
masculinity and its tensions in everyday practices from representatives of school associations, from
Federation of University Students of Ecuador [FUSE] at the University of Cuenca, for the
academic period march-august 2022. This qualitative and phenomenological study was
descriptive, with gender approach. For this, a study group was formed with 14 cisgender men, who
were representatives of FUSE school associations and participated in semi-structured interviews
and focus groups.
The representatives had traditional and alternative discourses of masculinity. The identity
of men was attained with male models in their family and with the subordination of the female.
There was an hegemonic discourse of the male as domineering, by nomation estrategies about
gender and legitimation of men power with a version on a feminism against men, but a participant
kept an alternative male discourse. There were minor discourses about male tension, which
disputed the appearance of agreement, by representatives’ thoughts about emotional restriction,
violence and stereotypes related to an ideal model of being a man.
