Resumen
The purpose of this project was to analyze the iconographic composition of Salasakas tapestries for
the creation of a catalogue of modular compositions. Methodologically, documentary and field
research was employed with techniques such as interviewing and observation that helped to provide
information about Salasaka´s culture and its tapestries, from this a photographic record of 68
tapestries of the different locations of the parish was obtained, of which a total of 30 tapestries was
determined based on the origin of the tapestry. Subsequently, by means of the survey made to a focus
group of 8 teachers from Graphic Design School of Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo
(ESPOCH), a total of 13 tapestries were selected to carry out the corresponding analysis. Descriptive
sheets were elaborated with the information provided in the interviews, by means of the analyticalsynthetic
method an analysis was made based on the compositional factors of the graphic design as:
laws, compositional categories, modulation and finally the structure of formation, then it was
continued with the synthesis of the analysis of each tapestry from which the generating modules of
the new modular compositions were obtained the same that were captured in the catalogue. As result
a catalogue of modular compositions was created from the proposals developed based on the
compositional analysis of each tapestry, which allows to rescue, preserve and promote the iconology
of Salasaka’s people, merging the ancestral knowledge with a contemporary proposal, staying within
of the compositional canons of Andean design, being able to preserve a sense of belonging in the
population, helping to promote part of their culture and disseminate Salasaka’s iconology in the
national and international scenery. It is recommended to the artisans and corresponding authorities to
release the catalogue of modular compositions, promoting design innovation in their tapestries and
other graphic applications.
