Abstract
The design of a system of sludge treatment from the regional drinking water plant Yanahurco was made. It is located in Mocha canton, Tungurahua province. The sludge of the plant does not have an adequate treatment and at the end it gets to have contact with land for agricultural production. This project was carried out to characterize the sludge and propose an adequate management through treatment methods, such as aeration and liming, which reduced the levels of dissolved iron and exchangeable aluminum, in the mud, as well as also they were in charge of balancing its pH. The treatment system has a tank thickener, which will reduce the moisture from the mud, a mixer tank to be the whitewash, with an aerator, a receiving tank of leachate, which will contain clarified water from the tanks and a drying area, which will contain the washed sludge for its final disposal.The treatment was validated according to the correlation of their variables, such as the
dosage of lime, the variation of pH, exchangeable aluminum, and dissolved iron, having a high correlation between the first three, but low with the variation in iron. It concluded that the liming was effective to level the pH and reduce aluminum, but not to reduce the iron; for which the aeration of the mud was the best option.
