Resumen
This article aims to analyze how poverty and diabetes limit the socioeconomic development of households in the Marcelino Maridueña county. The prevalence of diabetes falls on older adults, making them vulnerable to other diseases because this illness is among the first ones in causing mortality in the country as well as in other nations. On the other hand, poverty is a limiting factor for the socioeconomic development of Ecuadorians. To carry out this study, a documentary, bibliographic, and field analysis was required. Part of the information was collected in public institutions web pages, which provided data and figures about the prevalence of diabetes at a global and national level. The poverty index and its influence on the control and treatment of this disease was also researched. In addition, relevant information was needed about the Marcelino Maridueña county in order to reach the homes with at least one person, who suffers from this illness, among its members, and to apply a convenient method that allowed to choose 50 homes that register prevalence of diabetes. The technique used was a direct survey applied to the heads of the households to find out the main factors that affect their health and overall economy. The results indicate that most of the people who suffer from diabetes are adult men, they also revealed that harmful diet is the main cause for acquiring it. Poverty limits people for having a better quality of life and to prevent this disease.
