This research project presented as purpose the evaluation of the antioxidant potential and
the evaluation of the inhibitory activity on Edwardsiella tarda hydroethanolic extracts of
Terminalia catappa leaves. The activity of exclusively senescent leaves extracts was
compared with extracts obtained from a randomly collected mixture of green and
senescent leaves. For the progress of the investigation, the extracts were prepared in
different Ethanol/Water ratios using three different techniques: ultrasound, soxhlet and
maceration. By means of the statistical analysis of the results of the Folin Ciocalteu test,
the proportion of solvents and the method that produced the best extraction of phenols to
be used in the antioxidant and inhibitory capcity tests were determined. It was determined
that by the ultrasound method with the proportions of ethanol/water 50:50 for mixed
leaves and 70:30 for senescent leaves, the highest extraction of phenols was generated.
Using the DPPH method, it was determined that senescent leaves have a higher
antioxidant power compared to mixed laves, since an IC50 58,40 ug/mL was obtained.
Finally, through the application of the microdilution technique, it was verified that the
Terminalia catappa extracts have inhibitory power against the Edwardsiella tarda, at a
concentration of 17, 20 mg/mL in the case of the mixed leaves extract and 39,91 mg/mL
in senescent leaves, concluding that the senescent leaves has a higher inhibitory capacity
against the pathogen compared to the mixture that includes green leaves
