This paper proposes a methodology to solve the problem of optimal power flows using the interior point method (IPM) in electrical power systems. The IPM is an iterative algorithm used to solve linear and nonlinear optimization problems. The IPM for the problem of optimization of optimal power flows considers the classical model, minimizing active power losses and reducing the operating costs of an electrical power system, considering the limitations related to the technical and operational characteristics of the system. The proposed algorithm was carried out using the MATLAB-MATPOWER software. Based on the results obtained, the MPI shows to be an efficient algorithm for small and medium-sized electrical systems, and at the same time reflects a high accuracy in terms of the speed of solution. The development of this type of techniques provides the basis on which optimization applications to the electrical system can be implemented soon according to the current state of the energy system.
