Resumen
The issues that arise from the connections application without specific support are
mainly focused on security. In steel structures, carrying out a correct design of the connections
at the base of the column is essential, since it enables an adequate behavior of the building in
the face of seismic events, thus fulfilling the objective of structural performance of the NEC SE-DS (Seismic Hazard, Earthquake-Resistant Design). The Ecuadorian Construction
Standard -NEC-, is responsible for the design of constructions in the country and in its chapter
on the design of steel structures (NEC-SE-AC), it does not contemplate in detail a section
corresponding to the design of the connections between the tubular type columns and the base
plate. In the country, the use of reinforced profiles is frequent, which consist of plates welded
together and whose objective is to create an adaptation to the structural profiles used by the
AISC. In the middle, this common practice has focused on the elaboration of connections, as
is the case of tubular columns and base plates, whose process is not described in the current
local standard. Therefore, this research will focus on the design of base plates connected to
columns with square tubular sections, normally used in metal buildings in the country.
Therefore, an evaluation and analysis of the design process for this type of connection is
proposed.
