An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EWA ) was adapted for the detection of maize rayado lino vims (REV) in its insect vector Dalbulus midis. Optimization of experimental conditions for the assay included the use of anti-REV immunoglobulin G (IgG) purified by ion exchange chromatography and the determination of critical concentrations of the enzyme-IgG conjugate, Tween 20 and bovine serum albumen. Under the experimental conditions described in this work, it was possible to detect viral antigens in individual leafhoppers at concentrations of less than 1.0 ng.
