This paper analyzed the “fertilizers” link of the agro-industrial chains of the main export grains of Argentina, in order to study its interrelationships with other links in the chain, expose the size the market and describe its structure. For this, the evolution of apparent fertilizer consumption for the period 1990-2019 was addressed for the period 1990-2019, using national and international data. This study showed that the use of fertilizers increased 14 times, which narrowed the distances that separated the country from its main competitors. The market was also economically measured –imputing prices–, reaching the conclusion that it is comparable to the value of the wheat production of Buenos Aires. Subsequently, the structure of the market was analyzed by studying the degree of production concentration prevailing therein; a calculation in which we combine both the role of the main companies in the sector as producers and the one they play as importers of fertilizers. Considering the appreciable degree of concentration –in nitrogenous fertilizers, the two main groups explains 81% of the supply–, it is investigated the translation of that oligopolization into pricing procedures with market power. This is done through an econometric analysis that shows that there is no association between the price of urea in the Argentine market and its main input, natural gas. Finally, the work includes an analysis of the consequences of the growing consumption of fertilizers on the rural socioeconomic structure, through an analysis of the transformation that it exerts on the conformation of agricultural production functions, which makes them less likely to be organized by family businesses.
