Resumen
During the late 80s and the early 90s, scholars thoroughly explored the connections between Montaigne, Greece and Italy. This collective initiative was at its height at four major conferences — on the occasion of the anniversaries of L’Angelier’s edition of the Essays in 1988 and Montaigne’s death in 1992 and their subsequent collectanea: Montaigne et la Grèce (1990), Montaigne e l’Italia (1991), Montaigne et l’Europe (1992) and Montaigne et l’histoire des hellènes (1994).1 This study will revisit the question by analyzing Montaigne’s relationship to French anti-Italian Philhellenism.
