This work aims at performing a numerical analysis on the indentation of elastoplastic materials. The simulations are carried out using the commercial finite element code Abaqus, employing an axisymmetric model. An important tool toward the mechanical characterization of engineering materials, particularly in aerospace applications, is the indentation test, since the material hardness is intimately related to its impact resistance. Which is a relevant concern to the development of protective structures. Reasoning on such applications, this work carries out a parametric study, investigating the influence of key parameters, such as the friction coefficient, the elastic modulus, the material hardening and the plastic anisotropy, on the overall mechanical response. Specifically, the structural behavior in terms of the indentation force vs. indentation depth, in both loading and unloading conditions. Moreover, the stress and the plastic strain fields are also evaluated near the indented region. For validation purposes, the numerical results are compared with experimental data available in the literature.
