Resumen
The analysis and characterization of materials is a growing subject due to an appropriate selection of the material according to the needed performance of the components, which can contribute to the reduction of failures in projects. Nodular cast iron provides a wide spectrum of mechanical properties that can be obtained by changing certain variables at the processing or through heat treatments that present different and better combinations of properties for the application with special requirements. The present work aims to study the influence of the variation at parameters of heat treatments known as temper and tempering, and the effects on the mechanical and microstructural properties of the nodular cast iron FE 45012. Hardness, microhardness and metallographic analysis tests were used to characterize the material. The work was carried out in partnership with the Laboratório de Metalurgia Física, located on the UFSM campus. Comparing the analyzed samples, sample number 5 which was heat treated by tempering at 950°C and tempering at 480°C increased hardness in the amount of 413 HV. Sample number 2 heat treated only by quenching at 900°C, had a lower hardness, with 327 HV due to the microstructure of the pearlite.
