This research aimed to understand the experience of deaf students at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. The literature review was organized into two chapters. The first addressed the topic of deafness, aiming at the legal aspects of inclusion, history, identity and culture; the second chapter deals with the deaf in higher education. This is a qualitative research that used the Case Study as a strategy to understand the phenomenon of five case studies, related to the academic experience of deaf students enrolled, in various undergraduate courses, with the age group of twenty four years up to thirty four years. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews, performed in Brazilian sign language, and later it was transcribed in Portuguese. It is hoped that the analysis of the collected information can help on the comprehension of the reality experienced by deaf academics.
