This study aimed to analyze the work of the director of a public school in Santa Cruz do Sul / RS, in order to realize how realizes the democratic management, considering the principles of leadership. The object of study of this research was the Democratic Management School, directed by the following guiding question: How does leadership articulates the development of a democratic administration in a state school in Santa Cruz do Sul, considering the school principal? This research adopted a qualitative research methodology, case study through questionnaires to teachers and analysis of the Pedagogical Policy Project. Initially presented a historical context about the democratic school management. They then discussed the profile of leadership in democratic school management bringing a reflection opposite the importance director be a leader that meets the need of the school and the teachers who work in it. From this framework, we discuss about the particular reality of the analyzed school. As a result, it was found that the developed school management is not democratic, and that there is need for management based on dialogue, involving all education professionals in participation and in decision-making. Therefore, the school principal must develop leadership principles and act as a true leader who encourages and appreciates his team in building a democratic school success.
