In this paper the design and losses analysis on the semiconductors of a PWM chopper single-phase converter are presented. It steps down a voltage of 220 Volts at the source to 127 Volts at the load. The ordering of the commutation according to a voltage or current measured is described, as a solution for the commutation problem. The commutation and conduction losses are estimated for two arrangements: IGBT with a SiC-diode and SiCMOSFET. The filters are designed for both technologies, the MOSFET having its electrical parameters significantly smaller because of its higher operating frequency. Simulation results are presented and a prototype is designed.
