This study had as main objective to evaluate if the external restriction was a limiter of the economic growth of the countries that are part of the economic block called BRICS. Therefore, the main theories in the literature regarding the theoretical framework of growth driven by exports were discussed. Furthermore, the peculiarities of the countries that make up the BRICS are presented. In order to analyze them, an empirical test was carried out using the Thirlwall law between 1996 and 2018. From the econometric analysis, it was concluded that only two countries presented growth restriction due to the balance of payments: China and India.
