This research concentrates on Solo para Clarone (Clarinet) – C179 by Ernst Mahle, German composer born in 1929 and naturalized Brazilian in 1962, whose work is constantly associated with the use of modalism, folkloric melodies and free chromaticism. The work, originally written for the clarinet, is being academically investigated for the first time and also, no recordings using the clarinet have been found. Thus, this monograph seeks to identify the interpretive possibilities for the piece and it uses the analytical method proposed by White (1994) to achieve this objective, which divides the analysis into three levels: microanalysis, middle-analysis and macroanalysis; and four elements: rhythm, melody, harmony and sound. Including four chapters in addition to the introduction and final conclusions, the second chapter discuss biographical aspects of the composer and his Works for clarinet; the third presents the methodology used, from what refers to analysis to what is related to interpretative proposals; in the fourth chapter the findings arising from the analysis are exposed; and the fifth chapter reflections and interpretative suggestions developed from the analytical process of the work are presented. It was found that the work corroborates the associations between the composer and modalism and also with the use of chromaticism, but it does not show signs of using folklore. It is understood that despite being short, the work contains several singularities that open space for interpretive choices by performers. And finally, it is hoped that this research can contribute to the development of future research on Mahle's works for clarinet, as well as other possible conceptual associations and also for studies related to musical interpretation.
