A tragédia da boate Kiss: os enquadramentos jornalísticos em Zero Hora, Folha de S. Paulo, La Nación e The New York Times

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the journalistic frameworks in Zero Hora’s, Folha de S. Paulo’s, La Nación’s e The New York Times’ newspaper articles during the coverage of Kiss nightclub fire, that happened on January 27th, 2013, in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. It is also part of our objectives discover if the closeness, not only geographical but also psychological, influenced the coverage of countries that have faced similar tragedies. In order to achieve our objectives, we used as a method the news coverage protocol proposed by Silva and Maia (2011), adapted to our research, as well as the indirect analysis of media frames proposed by Vimieiro and Maia (2011). After analyzing the fifteen newspaper articles selected for this study, we found that the newspapers have specific and common aspects when they cover tragedies and disasters. We concluded that the different geographic scopes were decisive to determine the frameworks, but the news value tragedy “spoke louder” in the four journals. Finally, we noticed the methodological process’ versatility, which answered our questions and allowed us to characterize the coverage of each newspaper in a non-definitive basis.
