Due to the incessant seek of providing a quality energy service, it is inevitable that the consumer loads must be met with adequate voltage levels. Since they depend directly on the reactive power flow of the electric power system, control techniques are adopted that, in the literature, are referred as Volt/VAR control (VVC) techniques. Thereby, this paper aims to present a methodology of controlling the voltage levels and reactive power of electric power distribution systems, so that occurs the coordinated and centralized action of control equipment such as capacitor banks, the voltage regulators and the photovoltaic inverters. The optimization works with the objective function of minimizing the technical losses of the system without violating the imposed restrictions. The proposed methodology has been implemented through the interface among OpenDSS and MATLAB. The Volt/Var control has been applied to an IEEE test system, where changes has been made at the loads to respond as a real distribution system. It is noteworthy that the results have been satisfactory, due to the fact that the system, after the Volt/VAr control, meets all the requirements imposed.
