Resumen
Brazil had a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of R$7,4 trillion in 2020, being that the civil construction represents 2,9% of it, and presents an expected growth of 4% in 2021. The Brazilian standard NBR 15575 stablishes the project lifetime of 50 -minimum performance- to 75 years -superior performance- for reinforced concrete housing buildings structures, meanwhile the NBR 6118 stablishes quality criteria in order to achieve it. Aligned to that, this work aimed to study the main concrete damage mechanisms, its pathological manifestation, diagnoses and intervention to correct the effects. Understanding these mechanisms is important to allow prophylactic measures in the design and execution stages and then avoid or mitigate future pathological manifestation in the structures. The comprehension of the concepts mentioned above not only contribute for the safety of the structure but also has a financial impact, since the investment cost grows with a geometric progression of approximately 10 when comparing the total cost of a well-designed structure, the cost of an intervention during the execution and the cost of the intervention after the pathological manifestation.
