This work is the result of a field research based on a mathematical investigation of the
classroom, realized about the Financial Mathematics with the perspective of Critical
Mathematic Education. This research’s objective was to investigate the standing of the
students up to common financial problems and the utilization or non-use of the mathematical
knowledge to take a standing. The subjects of this research are students of a 3° grade class of
the high school Escola Estadual de Ensino Médio Érico Veríssimo, from Restinga Sêca. After
analyzing the results it’s possible to point out that the students are missing knowledge about
the interest rates in the current market, like banks interest rates, vehicle financing rates or
even interest rates in the local commerce. We concluded that the way mathematical
knowledge is developed in school not always prepare the student for life in our society.
