Resumen
Objective: Verify the presence of delirium in the elderly who enter the Emergency
Department (ED) of the Hospital Universitário de Santa Maria (HUSM), its
relationship with sociodemographic variables, reason and length of hospitalization,
comorbidities and death. Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional study that analyzed
data related to the sociodemographic profile, Confusion Assessment Method,
Charlson Comorbidity Index and follow-up of in-hospital death outcomes and length
of stay. The period analyzed in the study is between the months of July and
December 2019. Results: Of the 731 participants, 394 (53.9%) were male and with
an average age of 72 years. Delirium was identified in 98 (13.41%) participants and
death in 119 (16.27%). There was an association of delirium with age, marital status,
comorbidities, length of stay and death. Conclusion: The results described alert for
the high incidence of delirium in emergency units and its strong relationship with a
worse prognosis.
