Contemporaneity is marked by a mediatized society, in which the media exert influence on social instances, including even the contexts related to the field of health. This research is characterized by a qualitative study, constituted from a review of narrative literature based on scientific elements and an analysis based on the Brazilian media. It is intended to present an overview of the productions found in online and written media in Brazil and to correlate the results with possible mediatic interpretations in people's lives. The data collection sought to describe the studies presented in articles published in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) database, using the following descriptors: "media and madness", "media and mental illness", "media and mental disorder" and "Media and mental health". Only complete articles published in Portuguese were considered for inclusion in the study. Data were divided into categories of analysis based on narrative analysis. Subjects related to mental health and media were established: historical aspects, people with alcohol and drug abuse, pathologization and gender stigmas, social representations of the body and eating disorders, subjectivities of workers' health. We verified the scientific productions with the purpose of presenting the divergent opinions of the authors, related to the mental health opinions pointed out by the media in the present time.
