Resumen
Santa Maria, a Brazilian city located in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, has
been officially recognized as a "Culture City", since 1968, by municipal law n.º
1322/1968. Flôres (2007), registers the occurrence of intense cultural activities in the
city, mainly, driven by the railroad. In this context, the samba, registered as immaterial
cultural heritage of the country, begins its journey in the Heart of Rio Grande, at the
beginning of the 1930's, disembarking in the railway station, with military coming from
several Brazilian regions - who had been detached to serve in the city's barracks - and
spread with the help of the radio, which, at the time, had an important governmental
incentive. Although elements of African culture have been present since the city's
inception, I realized, in this research that the process of acceptance of this art in the
municipality only began in the 20th century, starting in 1930. This study sought to
identify and portray the trajectory of samba in Santa Maria, as well as to describe my
experience in this dance. To do so, I used bibliographic, documental and participative
research and applied a questionnaire with local personalities. I have observed, that
since your arrival, samba has been transforming, interacting and molding itself to the
different spaces where it expresses itself, which leads me to think of a shifting identity.
As a result of this research, I made na audiovisual production, called "Rout", which
tried to dialogue with the text of the work, showing places associated to the "samba
santa-mariense" scenario.
