This research consists of an investigation of the work Usher Waltz, written in 1984 by the guitarist-composer Nikita Koshkin (1956) and published in 1989 (Editions Orphée) and 1993 (Edition Margaux). The work was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s novel The Fall of the House of Usher, first published in 1839. The Usher Waltz has a prominent position among Koshkin’s works, among other factors, due to the use of expanded and idiomatic guitar techniques to represent the programmatic context of the piece. The work has been recorded and performed by many guitarists, including a recording by Koshkin. The aim of this research is investigate tempo and dynamics in four recordings in four recordings of the Usher Waltz by different performers. To description and comparison of the recordings, the Sonic Visualiser software was used as a complement to listening, according to the methods for analyzing recordings proposed by Cook (2009) and McAdams et al (2004). Listening and comparing the recordings made it possible to articulate reflections on the interpretation of the Usher Waltz through the dialogue between the data of the recordings and the literature review, published editions and statements by Nikita Koshkin.
