The current Brazilian health system is divided into two subsystems: the public and the private. The public is represented by the Unified Health System (SUS), and follows some principles, such as universality of access to health services at all levels of care, integrality and equity. The private subsystem can be contracted through private plans, which began to be regulated in 2000 after the implementation of the National Agency of Supplementary Health (ANS). Given this context, the present study aims to analyze the changes in the supply and demand of supplementary health services in Brazil after the beginning of regulation of the subsector by ANS. Therefore, it proceeds with the collection of secondary data and the performance of descriptive statistical analyzes. The results show that, since the creation of the ANS, the number of medical and hospital operators in the supplementary health subsystem has been falling, with 61% of organizations operating in the Southeast region. With regard to the demand for services, there was an increase in the coverage rate of health care health plans, as well as the fact that the age group that most contracts health insurance plans comprises the economically active population. Among the health plans most contracted by Brazilians are those of the group medicine modality, with predominance of coverage plans in a group of counties. In addition, there was a positive linear correlation between the number of health care recipients, the number of formal jobs and the GDP in Brazil.
