This paper analyzes an important segment of the Brazilian economy, but little explored in the area of communication: micro and small companies (MPEs). The central objective is to understand the relationship between owners / managers of MSEs with communication and how this tool can help in the development of companies of this nature and to stand out in the market. We start from a contextualization related to the studied segment to understand how communication happens within from them. For that, we went to the market in which MSEs are inserted. Micro and small companies were chosen as an object of research due to their communicational potential, low professionalism and current contextual conditions, which demonstrate the relevance and need for communication. The methodology of the work involves bibliographic and documentary research on the subject, followed by an exploratory research with micro and small entrepreneurs from the region of Serra Serra do RS, seeking to understand what the interviewees' knowledge about concepts such as communication, marketing and advertising and communication efficiency . It can be pointed out that there is knowledge about communication and its importance for micro and small companies, even if there is no consistent understanding of its concepts and applications. With the result of the research, we confirmed some of our questions and highlighted understandings that can be used in the communication of MSEs.
