Fire prevention measures are represented by a set of rules, devices and procedures to be observed in buildings, with the objective of protecting human life, as well as heritage and the environment. The Fire Prevention and Protection Plan is an instrument that aims to ensure the safety of people and buildings through actions to prevent the spread of fire and reduce possible material damage caused in a fire situation. In the preparation of PPCI, the state legislation seeks the specific requirements for each building, regarding the necessary fire protection measures, which follow the prescriptions of different standards. With this, the objective of this work was to analyze the changes occurred between the new norm of emergency signaling systems (ABNT NBR 16820:2020) in relation to the canceled norms (ABNT NBR 13434 – 1:2004, ABNT NBR 13434 – 2:2004 e ABNT NBR 13434 – 3:2018). For the development of the research, a documentary analysis of the rules and legislation that address fire safety was carried out, with an emphasis on safety signaling against fire and panic and a comparative study of the changes brought by ABNT NBR 16820:2020. With the changes in the standard, there is a change in test methods for all basic and complementary signage, which seek to use increasingly resistant to flames, cleaning, weathering, abrasion or other eventualities. As an example of changes, there is the mandatory use of the photoluminescent effect in warning signs, which in addition to facilitating the visibility and identification of signs in case of power outages, do not generate smoke or spread flames, increasing the safety, confidence and protection of users in the materials used. Finally, the importance of standardizing emergency signaling norms is highlighted, showing that the constant evolution of fire-fighting technologies accompanied by clear and efficient legislation adds the necessary security for buildings and their users.
