Resumen
The studies related to the usage of biogas as a source of electric power are on the agenda for
researches on alternative sources of energy. The biogas energy recovery provides a larger uti-
lization of this potentially pollutant gas mixture, in a way to use this source of energy often
ignored and wrongly managed. Allied to that, a subproduct commercialization may provide an
economical increase on the company’s cash flow. Therefore, the research problem’s definition
question is: is it economically viable to capture and to convert landfill generated biogas into
electric power? The study’s major objective is to analyze a biogas capture and conversion to
electricity system’s economic viability, having as scenario a sanitary landfill on the state of Rio
Grande do Sul. Methodological procedures of modeling and simulation were used for the gen-
eration of 11 scenarios of biogas capture and generation of electric power. The obtained result is that the 11 simulated scenarios are economically viable, reaching positives NPV, IRR higher
than the work’s stipulated MARR, with a Discounted Payback of 8,21 years on the optimistic
scenario, and an R$0,58/KWh LCOE.
